What is blister packaging?
Blister packaging groups suitable medicines into labelled compartments for scheduled doses. It may help you see which medicines are due and organize a daily routine.
Is it suitable for me?
Ask our pharmacist if you find it difficult to manage several medicines or keep track of your schedule. Together, we can discuss your current prescriptions, routine and whether you can comfortably read and open the packaging.
Not every medicine belongs in a blister pack. Some must remain in their original containers, and others may be supplied separately. Ask which medicines are outside your pack and how they fit into your routine.
Getting started
When you call or visit, have the following information ready. Ask about packaging arrangements, when supplies will be ready, and any applicable costs before starting.
- An up-to-date list of prescriptions, non-prescription medicines and supplements.
- Your usual dosing schedule and any concerns about taking medicines.
- Details of recent prescription changes or hospital discharge instructions.
- Your current pharmacy details, if a transfer may be needed.
When your medicines change
Tell the pharmacy promptly about a new prescription, a stopped medicine or a changed dose. Ask how the change affects any packs you already have. Get instructions before altering a prepared pack yourself.
If you miss a dose or are unsure which compartment to use, ask for advice specific to your medicines.
Support for caregivers
With the patient's consent, a caregiver can join the discussion. Agree on who will arrange refills, collect supplies and communicate changes.
Keep an updated medication list, including medicines supplied outside the pack, and bring it to health appointments.
